Who is Millie? Millie is my dog. Millie is the only entity who has always chosen me. I met her while I was volunteering at the animal shelter. I remember I was on the floor, letting all the dogs out. Millie actually turned around to greet me.
My parents were looking for a smaller lab, and she fit the bill. So I showed them her picture. They fell in love with her ears! There was just one problem. Millie allegedly knew how to scale fences and was a runner. My parents were not equipped to deal with that.
I knew there was something special about Millie. I was married then, so I had to get his approval. Somehow Millie knew what to do with my ex, and we ended up adopting her!
Millie has an interesting story. She was a stray in Tennessee and was on death row when a veterinarian stepped in, saved her, and shipped her to Illinois. She’s from Jackson and Lawrenceburg, Tennessee.
Millie and I bonded right from the start. She loved my ex, but she was clearly my dog. She would always lie beside me on the sofa. So when our marriage dissolved, she was the only thing I fought for. He told me not to take her, but I did.
Millie is my second rescue. My first rescue was a border collie named Jazz. Jasmine and I had a lot of adventures…including moving to Montana! But Millie, Millie is my soul dog. She’s always there for me. Some days she reminds me to go for walks because that is her greatest joy, and other days she reminds me to rest. She doesn’t play ball or fetch, but she loves to snuggle and lick my face. She’s kind of a serious dog, like her mama.
She’s my slow-to-warm-up girl. I wouldn’t describe her as overly friendly towards others. It takes her a while to get used to new people, but she has always loved me. From the moment I let her out of her cage at the shelter until now.
It took her some time to get used to my parents and their dogs, but now she looks forward to visiting them on the weekends, but she’s always ready to come home to our tiny apartment.
That was something I worried about when I was getting a divorce. We had a nice house and a backyard, but Millie never looked back. She doesn’t care that we have a tiny apartment. She is happiest when it’s just us…doing whatever we do. She is my most loyal friend.
