I’m a moody girl. When I am happy, I am ecstatic, and everything feels vibrant and alive. However, when I am sad, it becomes a little more difficult to lift my mood, as I often find myself caught in a whirlwind of thoughts and emotions that feel heavy and overwhelming.
A friend of mine challenged me to make a list of “ten things that instantly lift your mood.” I think for most people, this would be an easy task, but for me, I tend to “sit” in my moods, experiencing each feeling deeply rather than just brushing past it. The challenge, though daunting, also sparked a glimmer of curiosity, as I began to ponder the small joys that have the potential to brighten even the darkest of days.
- My dog. Millie, even when she is being annoying, is my most loyal companion and often makes me laugh.
- Music. I can use music to intensify or calm down any mood.
- My friends. I have a small circle now, but at least they let me be me, and I don’t have to pretend to be something I am not.
- My parents…most of the time, lol. Sometimes my parents and I clash, but as I have gotten older, we seem to click more.
- Sunshine. I literally wilt like a flower when the clouds stay out too many days in a row.
- Opening a window when the weather is nice.
- Burning a favorite candle.
- Getting into a good book. Sometimes it’s hard to slow down and start reading, but once I get into it, I am hooked.
- Watching a favorite movie, even if it’s sad; it helps me cry and release whatever is bothering me (but I enjoy a good romantic comedy as well).
- Writing because it gives me a chance to organize my thoughts.
I guess coming up with ten mood boosters wasn’t as difficult as I thought it would be. It really is the simple things in life that bring me joy, and I am proud of that.
