I think the deepest lessons are the most painful. I despise staying stagnant, but I’m not always prepared for the pain that comes with growth. Sometimes I fantasize about growth without pain. For instance, it would be so nice if my anxious attachment style just magically became secure and my people-pleasing tendencies mysteriously transformed into authenticity and assertiveness without any work.
Reframing my view of pain and growth is probably the first step, as just the fear of making mistakes usually overwhelms me. (Perfectionism 101). My friends and family constantly encourage me to give myself grace, but I more often than not, I fail to radiate in that kind of kindness.
I’m really good at giving other people the benefit of the doubt. In fact, mercy is my number one spiritual gift. There’s just some kind of mental block about extending the same courtesy to myself. I think the reason why it is so easy for me to give others grace is: 1) I’m naturally empathic and 2) I genuinely believe most people mean well.
I believe it’s part of being human to let suffering lead to personal growth. Every challenge we face and each moment of discomfort can be a wonderful opportunity for transformation. Our struggles ultimately uncover our true strength and resilience.
In the end, I can choose to accept the idea that growth might come with some discomfort, focus on how to heal along the way, and then finally thrive.
